Similar to the traditional desktop version of WinZip you can compress in .zip and .zipx files formats and secure the compression with military-grade encryption. In addition, you can access a number of compression containers as well, including .zip, RAR, 7z, .zipx plus 22 more formats, including .gz, .bz, .ISO, .CAB, .B64, .BHX, .BZ, .BZ2, .CAB, .HQX, .LHA and .LHZ, .MIM, .TAZ, .TBZ, .TBZ2 .TGZ, .TZ, .UU, .UUE, .XXE, and .Z. Perhaps one of the great features of WinZip Universal is the integration with Cortana to allow your digital assistant to zip or unzip files using the new app. The Windows 10 Universal version of the app also brings seamless integration with cloud services, such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box to allow you easily get your files, zip and encrypt before sharing them with other people. You can also send large email attachments without leaving the app. ZipShare is a service that comes included to offer secure share of files on the web. Alongside encryption, you can also password protect your files using WinZip Universal. The UI is intuitive and responsive as you would expect with any Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app. However, WinZip Universal is not following the design language we’re seeing on most apps like Xbox, Wunderlist, Facebook, Weather, and others. Instead, the design is very similar to the Microsoft Office Mobile apps with the navigation bar on the top for a touch-friendly experience and access to other options through the hamburger button on the top-left.
Overall, WinZip Universal seems off to a good start, but there is a lot to consider before making your purchase. One potential deal-breaker with WinZip Universal is its pricing model, as Corel is offering its compression software for $7.99 for one-year subscription, which is something we’re not used to see in these kinds of software. Also, considering that there are better alternatives that are free, such as 7zip, and File Explorer, as another example, already features compression capabilities. However, if you need a way to compress, encrypt, and password protect your files on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile with a single solution, you can download WinZip Universal from the Store.
