New details from Intel shows that with Haswell, the company will be introducing three different levels of integrated graphic processors. The company will continue delivering its “HD Graphics” (low-end) and it will be also bringing to the market two new GPU names: Iris and Iris Pro. 15W Ultrabook U-series processors will include the new HD Graphics 5000 GPU, which doubles the performance of the current 4000 series integrated in the low-power Ivy Bridge processors. The new higher-end graphic processors will be included in the new Haswell CPUs starting with the 28W line. The 28W TDP chip series will house the new Intel Iris GPU, which the CPU maker says will deliver up to 2x performance of their previous HD Graphics 4000 chip in 3DMark11. In the other end we have Iris Pro, which is a premium chip and it will be integrated in the quad-core Haswell CPUs of 47W or greater. According to Intel, Iris Pro measures shows 2.5x improvement to the current HD Graphics 4000 with H-series mobile chips, and 3x boost with R-series desktop processors.
Intel has been trying for years to boost graphics in its discrete GPUs and now with Iris and Iris Pro, the company seems to be in the right track and compete head-to-head with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M. However, if you are looking for a serious gaming PC performance, you’ll always be better spending a little more money and getting an actual dedicated graphic card.
