The new Facebook search engine will make easier for the one-billion+ users — or the one-trillion connections — to find photos, people, places and content within the network. The first thing that people will notice right-away is that the blue bar atop has been completely redesigned to accommodate Graph Search. Also notification icons that once were on the left, now will appear on the right-side of the bar; and the Facebook logo has been replaced with the white, one letter logo. As you search different terms, you can save the results and give them custom names, building new view experiences. “There are already more than a billion people, more than 240 billion photos and more than a trillion connections.” What’s different about Facebook’s new search capability when compare with other search engines (e.g., Google) is that Graph Search uses “natural” language as query, instead of keywords or key-phrases that we’ve been using until now. For example, one search term could be: “restaurants nearby that my friends like”, you can also apply this way of search to places, people, photos and other content that was shared with you in the social network. Additionally, you can refine the search with filters that will appear in the right pane. Knowledge is power! Facebook knows that, and now you understand why the social network stopped letting Google access the social network. This is a lot of powerful information that the search giant cannot scan, analyze and collect to expand even further its ad market. But who can? — Microsoft. This is a big deal to increase the search market share of Bing. Even though Graph Search was designed in-house, the Bing and Facebook team worked together to integrate Microsoft’s decision engine to bring web search results alongside Facebook search that it will also be used as fallback when Facebook cannot supply an answer.

The social network giant also noted that the new search engine serves as dating and recruiting purposes, which also aims to other social networks like LinkedIn and many online dating services.
